Tredyffrin Township Leads the Way

On March 17, Tredyffrin Township, Pennsylvania celebrated the dedication of their new 1 kilowatt (kW) solar panel system, which they were awarded as participants in the Pennsylvania Clean Energy Communities Campaign.  This program, which is jointly sponsored by the Sustainable Development Fund and SmartPower, encourages local communities to voluntarily commit to purchase at least 20% of their total electricity use from renewable energy sources by the year 2010.  In addition to this commitment by the municipal government, a percentage of local residents and businesses must also purchase renewable energy in order to qualify for the municipality’s free solar panel.  Already over 1,000 residents in Tredyffrin have signed up through the PECO Wind program to  receive renewable wind energy for their homes and businesses.

Tredyffrin Township has the honor of being the first community in Pennsylvania to qualify for the solar panel through this campaign.  Local officials decided to place the panel on the roof of a pavilion in the middle of a local park, surrounded by baseball and football fields, an amphitheater and trail systems.  As a highly trafficked and visible area, this location will bring much attention to the solar panel and the wonderful environmental work being done by Tredyffrin Township.
