The City Bakery, which uses 100% wind power, is always seeking new and creative ways to help the environment. City Bakery will now include the gift of
green energy in their annual holiday gift basket. Along with an assortment of local gourmet treats and gifts, the basket will contain a Community Energy gift card which offsets the electricity usage of an average home during the holiday season. Based on the average annual usage of the American home, the gift card represents green power for the holidays – from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.
The Green Baskets themselves are made with recycled newspaper and shipped from either the New York or Los Angeles store, based on proximity, in order to reduce the fuel required for shipping. Each coast has a separate list of regional specialties – cheeses, sweets, fruits, nuts, chocolates, coffees, candles – hand selected from farms across Maine, Vermont, California and Washington.
A true eco-minded business, The City Bakery uses local and organic ingredients whenever possible. The flagship store near Union Square in New York City regularly takes energy saving measures by dimming the lights. The two smaller NYC bakeries, Birdbath and the Neighborhood Green Bakery, are outfitted with sustainable building materials – everything from countertops to walls.
