We all enjoy a nice warm January day every once in awhile, but these unseasonably warm spells are threatening one of our favorite winter pastimes: skiing. Increasingly, ski resorts are stepping up to fight climate change by reducing the carbon footprint of their electricity use with wind-generated Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
Resorts such as Okemo Mountain (NH), Mount Sunapee (NH), Crested Butte (CO), Catamount Mountain (NY), Windham Mountain (NY), and Hunter Mountain (NY) have all committed to purchase clean, emission-free wind energy certificates from Community Energy. This effort to go green is just one of many ways these ski resorts are implementing climate friendly practices to ensure that there will be many more white days ahead.
“We recognize our guests' core values concerning the environment and we share those values,” says Tom Mueller, Owner of Triple Peaks, which consists of Okemo, Mount Sunapee, and Crested Butte. “We have the ability to demonstrate that Triple Peaks is a good community and corporate citizen working toward energy independence for America through clean, renewable sources like wind energy.”
Whenever a CEI customer purchases RECs they are taking a proactive approach to green their operations and fight climate change. Next time you visit one of these resorts, look for signs and brochures that announce their commitment, and take time to thank them for joining your efforts in the fight for environmental responsibility. They are showing the leadership we need to keep our winters clean, cold and beautiful, the way nature intended them to be.
