Clear & Credible Offset Calculations

The Green-e Climate certification uses a clear methodology based on Environmental Protection Agency data and the World Resources Institute to calculate carbon reductions from grid-connected renewable energy. A 3rd party audit and Renewable Energy tracking system ensures no double counting.

Passes the Additionality Test

Offsets from grid-connected renewable energy projects meet the most rigorous additionality standards. Projects depend on the carbon offset revenues for financing and result in measurable, permanent carbon reductions. Accounting for about 2% of US energy production, renewable energy is clearly not “business as usual”.

Cleaner Air
Renewable energy generation is emissions-free and displaces fossil fuel generation. Coal generates 54% of our electricity and is the single largest air polluter in the U.S. A typical 500-megawatt coal plant produces 500 tons of small particulates and 720 tons of carbon monoxide known to cause asthma, heart and lung disease.

Energy Security
As the US has become more reliant on natural gas, our economy has become more susceptible to supply shortages and price spikes. Natural gas prices today are more than double their 1990s levels. Renewable energy, like wind and solar, require no fuels, insulating electricity prices from outside forces.

Domestic Economic Growth
The US economy is built on electricity. In this high-tech society, access to a steady, growing source of renewable energy is vital to national prosperity. Further, achieving 20% renewable energy by 2020 is expected to have the following benefits:

• 185,000 new jobs from renewable energy development 
• $66.7 billion in new capital investment, $25.6 billion in income to farmers, ranchers, and rural landowners, and $2 billion in new local tax revenues 
• $10.5 billion in lower electricity and natural gas bills by 2020 (growing to $31.8 billion by 2030)
