I like things that make sense.
In fact, that’s why I like the concept of sustainability.  When we think, plan and act sustainably we enjoy all of what life has to offer today without compromising the future.

Sounds pretty simple.

I’m sure if you asked, most people would opt for a sustainable planet over one that is in a tailspin of decay. So why then is there such a disconnect in the way we choose to live?  Why do we perpetuate lifestyles that work against us, instead of for us?  Often times we seem to attack the very system that fosters life and growth – Mother Nature.

I think it’s because we don’t well-enough understand what exactly it is Mother Nature does for us on a day-to-day basis.  It’s easy to overlook and to take for granted such an amazing system that just “is.”

That’s why when I read Andy Mannle’s Top Ten Reasons Mother Nature is Too Big to Fail on Arcwire.org, I felt compelled to share it with you. Andy’s article puts Mother Nature in perspective, and even compares her value to issues present in everyone’s mind these days – like the global economy.

“It's been calculated that nature's "Ecosystem Services" are worth over $33 trillion dollars a year – nearly double the size of the global economy. And while that figure is important for putting a value on Nature's contributions to the economy, it belies the fact that without nature we could not survive at all.”

The article goes on to cover Net Primary Production (NPP), Plant and Animal Products, Pollination, Cleaning the Air, Purifying the Water, Mitigating Floods, Controlling Erosion, Detoxifying Pollutants, and  Regulating Climate – all vital, life-preserving services you don’t pay a dime for.  It’s an enjoyable, informative read, and it may even help you look with fresh eyes at the world around you.  Believe me, it’s worth it.
