This November, I’ll be celebrating the third anniversary of owning my Honda Metropolitan scooter. My desire to own a scooter started after a trip to Italy, where it seemed like most of Rome made their way around town on two wheels. Regardless of how chic the men and women looked on their Vespas, it made a lot of practical sense and I vowed to buy one upon my return home. While there are many reasons to own a scooter, here are my top three green-reasons (greensons?) to get a scooter:

First, scooters help reduce road congestion. I whip around town and get from point A to B in a quarter of the time it takes a car, and, I practically get VIP parking everywhere (scooters must park within one foot of a building or be chained to a bike rack). The less impact a vehicle can make on the road and our environment, the better.

Second, scooters can get up to 80 miles per gallon! Compared to the standard car, which only gets about 20 miles per gallon, the scooter will save you money (on average, I spend $3 a month on gasoline!) and emits less carbon dioxide emissions into our atmosphere. Win-Win.

Lastly, scooters are fun!  There is a certain freeing sensation when hitting the open road with your ride. The wind howls, the sun shines and you are subject to the elements of the earth every time. It’s an environmental dream ride!

So, if you have ever contemplated owning a scooter, you should really consider the environmental and societal benefits that these fun vehicles have to offer.
If you have any questions about owning a scooter or have other great reasons for owning one, comment on this blog.  Ciao!
