I have been interested in wind energy for years, and work for a wind energy company, but had never visited a wind farm. I pass the Jersey Atlantic wind farm in Atlantic City every summer on the way to my vacation house in Brigantine, New Jersey. I can see the turbines from the beach, but I have never gone for a tour. When I was offered the opportunity to visit a new wind farm in southwestern Pennsylvania, I was excited at the prospect of finally being up close to a turbine. We visited the Casselman Wind Farm on a cool, drizzly October day. The wind farm is on a ridge line and there are two other wind farms on neighboring ridges. The fall foliage was at its peak and there were beautiful autumn colors covering the hills in every direction. There are twenty three turbines on this wind farm. The day was quite windy and the turbine blades were in constant motion. The turbines are as tall as thirty story buildings and are very impressive to be next to. The background sound on the farm was a humming from the turbines. This was not an obtrusive sound and disappeared when we entered the office. It is a very peaceful place and reinforced my positive view of wind energy. If you have a chance to visit a wind farm, I think that you will be impressed by the experience.
