How sustainable can sustainable really be?
Send this blog to a friend
A conversation with a colleague recently brought up the question ”How sustainable can sustainable really be?”. In modern times, with all our technology, how sustainable can one’s life be without living in a farming community, making one’s own clothes and cookware? This would require disassembling modern day society, which isn’t an option. From the big corporations down to the individual, we each have a responsibility to the global community and the local one we live in. Pushing corporations to be more sustainable in their practices—in the office and in the products they create, holding each other accountable for everyday actions and bringing those actions into the words we speak will go a long way toward a more sustainable future while maintaining modernity.
How do we do that? What can I do? Common questions. Actions like considering purchases before they are made, making local purchases, talking about sustainability, starting committees at work for “green” movements are all activities that push forward concepts and ideas toward sustainable manufacturing and best practices. They’re relatively easy to do and can be cathartic for those that are passionate. One individual’s sense of responsibility can help others find their voice to be able to come closer to sustainability in a modern world. This is the answer we found to our question without learning how to work a loom and a plow.
