I highlighted in a recent blog posting how the Princeton Review now includes a Green Rating for colleges and universities around the nation.  This piqued my curiosity: how is my alma mater, The University of Notre Dame, measuring up?

The University of Notre Dame received an 86; out of a possible 99 points. I consider that pretty respectable given that the Green movement continues to gain momentum among individuals, businesses and institutions alike. After some quick research, I also learned that in the 5 years since I graduated the university has created an Office of Sustainability, established in 2008! I had no idea that they had made such a dedicated effort to promote sustainability on campus; including LEED certified buildings, renewable power generation and waste reduction, among other initiatives.

My favorite part of the website is the What You Can Do Section that speaks to what I can do as an Alumnus to participate in green initiatives on campus. In classic Notre Dame fashion the website outlines how to “green your tailgate” which I find very amusing. But more importantly, information is included on how to be a mentor to students who have an interest in environmental issues.

I appreciate the opportunity to get involved in Notre Dame’s sustainability programs despite having left campus before the effort began. Hopefully in upcoming years Notre Dame will get 99 out of 99 points - Go Irish!
