City of Middletown and Wesleyan University - Leaders For Clean Energy in Connecticut

First Solar Installation in Connecticut as a Result of Clean Energy Communities Program

(Middletown, CT) April 20, 2006 - A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today to celebrate the City of Middletown’s success in a statewide campaign to support clean, renewable energy sources. Recent wind energy purchases by the City and Wesleyan University, which are supplied by wind energy marketer and developer Community Energy, Inc., have earned Middletown the distinction of being the first city in Connecticut to receive a new solar energy installation as a reward for their clean energy efforts.

Under an incentive program known as ’Clean Energy Communities‘ sponsored by the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund and SmartPower, a non-profit dedicated to promoting clean energy, achieving certain levels of participation in the voluntary Clean Energy Options statewide program qualifies communities for free solar panels. The City’s purchase to date, along with the more than 180 Middletown residents who have enrolled, qualified Middletown as a Clean Energy Community.

Geen Thazhampallath, Mayor Giuliano’s Chief of Staff added, “Middletown understands that making the switch to clean energy alternatives is critical to any city's economic, environmental and health considerations. So, it goes without saying that we are proud to be the first Clean Energy Community to receive a solar installation and we look forward working with Community Energy and our residents to achieve our goal of 20% by 2010.”

Wesleyan University’s renewable energy purchase bolstered Middletown’s efforts, with a purchase that is equivalent to 100 residential enrollments. This purchase enabled the city to receive a larger solar power installation than was originally planned.

Peter Staye of Wesleyan University noted, “Wesleyan is very pleased to partner with Community Energy and the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) in the world of renewable energy. Since the relationship started with Wesleyan's giga-watt hour purchase of green energy in the fall of 2005, the CCEF and Community Energy have been hard working leaders in promoting awareness of green energy and increasing the availability and use of renewable resources to Middletown, Connecticut, and the entire New England region.”

Brent Alderfer, CEI President concluded, “The City of Middletown and Wesleyan University have demonstrated remarkable leadership and continue to lead the way in this statewide program. Community Energy is happy to supply their clean energy commitments and help the city reach this exciting milestone in bringing more renewable energy to Connecticut.”
